Library information for staff
This section provides an overview of general information about the Drill Hall Library and your library account.
Accessing the Drill Hall Library
Once you have joined the library you will need your staff ID or Universities at Medway library card (depending on which university you are employed by) to obtain access to the library and to borrow items.
Our opening hours change periodically throughout the year. Check our webpage for full details.
Your library account
As a member of staff you are entitled to borrow up to 16 items (University of Greenwich staff) or 24 items (University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University staff).
Loan periods depend on the type of item borrowed: ordinary loans are four weeks for University of Greenwich staff, or one calendar year for University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University staff; 7-day loans are for seven days; reference material and journals are not available to borrow.
Issues and returns can be made using our self-service machines.
You can view your library account online using My Library Account.
Renewals can also be made online through My Library Account or by using the self-service machines in the library.
- Document Supply loans from the British Library: renew in person at the Welcome Desk;
- items borrowed in person from your home institution library (Templeman, Augustine House, Broadstairs, Salomons): renew through LibrarySearch, which can be found on your home institution's library pages; or
- items borrowed through our inter-library loan scheme (from Templeman, Augustine House, Broadstairs or Salomons libraries): renew in person at the Welcome Desk or phone 01634 883601 from 09:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday.
All items held are included on the Universities at Medway library catalogue. The library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification system.
You can limit the catalogue by selecting Medway Campus, under the library location tab on the left, to display only items held in the Drill Hall Library. Further catalogue search tips can be found here.
Reserve books and request items from Avery Hill and Greenwich library sites by clicking on the 'Reserve this item' icon below the book details and following the prompts. We will e-mail you when the item is ready to collect from the Drill Hall Library (normally within two working days). University of Kent students can also reserve Drill Hall Library books through LibrarySearch - simply click Requests.
Journal articles from paper publications held in the Avery Hill and Greenwich libraries can be ordered using a Document Supply and Inter-Library Loan Form. We will contact you on your university e-mail address when the article is available to collect from the Welcome Desk.
Many electronic resources (including e-books, e-journals and databases) are available to you and your students.
Use LibrarySearch for access to e-books, journal articles and more.
Your university also has access to many other online resources, such as e-journal subscriptions and research databases
- University of Greenwich - log in to the Portal and select the My Learning tab. From here you can access an alphabetical list of databases and other online services.
- University of Kent - the resources page contains links to databases, journals and other electronic resources.
- Canterbury Christ Church University - sign in to LibrarySearch and select the 'Find Databases' or 'Find e-journals' links to access additional resources.
Inter-library loans from Templeman, Augustine House, Broadstairs and Salomons libraries
University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University staff can also borrow items from their home institution libraries (Templeman, Augustine House, Broadstairs, Salomons) using our inter-library loan service. These items will be sent to the Drill Hall Library Welcome Desk for collection and we will notify you by university e-mail when the items arrive.
University of Kent staff
To request items from the Templeman Library that are not available at the Drill Hall, order via the University of Kent's LibrarySearch - click the Details tab, select Request Delivery to Drill Hall Library and fill in the details. Collect from the Drill Hall Library Welcome Desk when you have received our email confirming the item's arrival.
To request a photocopy of an article from a print journal from the Templeman Library you will need to complete a Document Supply and Inter-Library Loans request form.
Canterbury Christ Church University staff
To request items or a photocopy of an article from a print journal from Augustine House, Salomons or Broadstairs libraries if they are not available at the Drill Hall, you will need to complete a Document Supply and Inter-Library Loans request form. Collect from the Drill Hall Library Welcome Desk when you have received our email confirming the item's arrival.
Please note that items borrowed in this way can only be renewed in person at the Welcome Desk or by telephone on 01634 883601 from 09:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday. Items must be returned to the Welcome Desk.
University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University staff are also provided with a separate library account at your home institution library (Templeman, Augustine House, Broadstairs, Salomons). This enables you to borrow items from your home library in person if you choose. Renew these items via your home institution's LibrarySearch and return them directly to your home library or use the book return machine in the Drill Hall Library.
