Supporting your teaching and research
The Drill Hall Library relies on its links with academic staff to:
- help build and maintain a collection;
- ensure that we provide relevant information skills training; and
- enable students and staff to obtain maximum benefit from the library and the services that we provide.
Your key contact in the library is your Academic Support Librarian, who is responsible for library services to your department.
The library offers a variety of services aimed at supporting your teaching and research needs.
Library induction and tours
- For new students: contact your Academic Support Librarian to arrange.
- For new and existing staff: we offer an induction tour, introduction to your subject librarian and an introduction to library resources. Contact your Academic Support Librarian to arrange.
Library skills workshops
Library skills workshops are available on request for all students, including postgraduates and can be booked through your Academic Support Librarian. Workshops can be tailored to your requirements and time-frames. Examples of what we can offer include:
- library research skills;
- using ebooks and e-journals;
- using the internet for research;
- evaluating information;
- subject-specific database training, such as Westlaw, CINAHL, PsycInfo or IEEE;
- finding statistical information; and
- research sessions prior to student assessment deadlines.
IT skills support
For any IT support queries, please email the IT team or ask at the Helpesk.
Course material procurement
- We provide a reading list checking and book ordering service and purchase specific resources to support your students' learning (books, journals, training/educational DVDs, training manuals, databases, electronic materials etc).
- Our team of Academic Support Librarians are available to work with you to support course development and ensure that collections of relevant and up-to-date resources are maintained for you and your students.
- We can provide library representation at your school/departmental meetings to discuss any issues relating to the library and to keep you up-to-date with our services.
- We hold a User Group meeting once a term. It is a forum for our users to discuss developments and services with us. Further information can be found online.
Digital copying/scanning services
- Academic staff will need to use the digital copying/scanning services provided by their home institution.

What you can do to help us
Course material procurement
- Help make sure your recommended books are in the library.
- Consult with your Academic Support Librarian at an early stage in the planning of new modules and programmes.
Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church: please send your module guides to your Academic Support Librarian as soon as possible, who will check them and arrange for any items not already in the library to be ordered if available.
Kent: please update your lists at http://medwaylists.kent.ac.uk - 'Publishing' a list lets us knows that items have been added.
Promote our library inductions and training
- Involve us in your students' learning by inviting us to deliver induction tours and training sessions on library and information retrieval skills.
- Invite us to your meetings so we can discuss any library issues and keep you up-to-date with new developments.
- Come to our briefings and training sessions on new services and facilities.
