Printing

Before you can print you need to purchase printer credits.

There are 10 black & white and 3 colour printers located within the library. The name of each printer is shown on the poster above each printer, along with directions to the nearest colour printer. BW followed by a number means it is a black and white printer. Colour followed by a number means it is a colour printer.

Double-sided printing

From Tuesday 13th July 2010 all black and white printers will default to printing on both sides of the paper, not just one. Single-sided printing will still be available, but you must positively select this option from the printer menus. It is important that you consider this change when printing your work. Schools may still require submissions to be single-sided, which is still available.

How do I print my work single-sided?

  • Simply select the queue for your printer that is associated with the printer that is single-sided, ie BW08 not BW08_Double-sided.

Does my school accept double-sided printing for coursework submission?

  • Submission formats are a matter of policy for the schools. If you have any questions regarding submission formats please contact them for advice.

Who decided to make this change and why?

  • The change has been agreed by the Universities of Greenwich, Kent and Canterbury Christ Church as part of their commitment to reducing production in greenhouse gasses, both at the Medway campus and across all institution campuses

Can I print colour double-sided?

  • Colour printing will still default to single-sided but if you wish to print double-sided simply select the double-sided queue from the printer menu.

You are automatically assigned the nearest black and white and colour printer.

Posters

There are two large scale plotters which can be used to print A2, A1 and A0 size posters.

Prices are as follows:

  • A0 = £3.20
  • A1 = £1.60
  • A2 = £0.80

All poster printing is done from the library counter. You will need to bring your USB stick containing your poster to the library counter and a member of staff will print it to one of the plotters. Please do not leave it to the last minute. It can take up to 30 minutes to print a poster and other students may already be waiting. In busy times you may be asked to come back and collect your poster the following day.

Tips for preparing and printing your poster

When preparing a poster we recommend that you use Microsoft PowerPoint. Please remember that you are designing a poster, as such, all information must fit on one page/slide.

Do not use Word.

Before you start adding content, download one of the templates below and use it to design your poster.

When adding images remember to use the Insert > Picture > From File menu option. This will result in lower file sizes for the finished poster and ensure printing goes smoothly.

Finally, try not to have backgrounds with large blocks of solid dark colours, especially black. This wastes ink and decreases the legibility of your poster.

Download the above information in pdf format.

Poster Training

Training sessions are occasionally held to aid you in the creation of your poster presentations.

Copying

Photocopying cards (or 'Flexicards') can be obtained from the main Drill Hall Library counter. We ask for a deposit of 50p for each card, refundable on return at the end of year/course. The card is blank; but there are value loaders available in the Drill Hall Library. We advise against loading large amounts of money on the card, in case of loss or damage. The cost for black and white A4 photocopying is 5 pence per sheet.

Colour photocopies can be made at a charge of 20p per page by speaking to a member of the Library staff.

You can photocopy onto acetates or overhead transparencies (OHTs) but you must use those purchased from library counters (many makes of acetates melt in the copying machines, so please don't use types other than ours!)

A standard charge of 5p per sheet is made for photocopying of material held at other Campus libraries (for example, from periodicals or reference material which cannot be sent to your Campus, or for material obtained by us from outside the university).

Please observe and adhere to Copyright Regulations displayed by photocopy machines.

Scanning

A dedicated scanning area is located in the Quiet Zone containing a number of A4 scanners and one A3 scanner.
